Traditional research in the science notion, is where there is some uncertainty, and you propose some knowledge to reduce the uncertainty, and you do experimental work to come to a conclusion to either prove or disprove your proposition. New knowledge is created and contributed in the process. You will pass either way.
In the case of an industry linked research, the business is not interested in the creation of new knowledge, but the creation of a new product, to solve a problem.
In most cases new knowledge is generated in the process, but unless we carefully interpret it, the traditional research model does not apply.
Depending on definition, solving a new problem in a new way in the engineering notion does not necessarily count as creating a new knowledge in the science notion.
